Since 2005, Latinos have turned out to protest U.S. immigration policies. But this year, May Day marches are expected to draw a larger coalition of those immigrants rights groups, women's groups, and LGBTQ advocates. One of today's largest marches is expected to take place in Los Angeles.

One in eight California students has a parent who's undocumented. And at least 250,000 of those students themselves are undocumented, too. Those are among the head-turning numbers in a new report out from The Education Trust-West, an advocacy organization focused on educational justice.

In Palo Alto, where Asian-Americans make up nearly 40 percent of the student population, they also make up roughly 40 percent of youth suicides. We start our show with a story about a team of underdogs. They're not jocks -- they're teenage chefs. We're going to bring you a high school love story. It's about two Filipino immigrants finding a lost love after four decades apart. We're calling them 'Tess' and 'Marco' because they're both undocumented, and they've asked us not to use their real names. Their story comes to us as part of a new series called "At Risk in the Trump Era," produced in collaboration with the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Over the next few weeks, student reporters will explore the impact of the first 100 days of the Trump presidency on vulnerable communities in Southern California.

This month, California music fans flocked to the desert to see and be seen at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. But here on our show, we like to focus on some homegrown talent that might not make big headlines. Producer Suzie Racho and pop music critic Steve Hochman tell us about some new releases from three Southern California artists.

We're going to listen in on an exchange between three generations, in three different languages. It's the final episode in our "Storycorps" series, featuring conversations between Latinos in the San Joaquin Valley. If you're like so many Californians with immigrant roots, you may not speak the same language as other generations in your family. In this story you'll hear 12-year-old Angelina Flores speak in English, asking her father, Luis, to relay questions to her grandfather, Julian, about his life in Mexico.

Despite soaring studio profits, film and TV writers in Hollywood are facing declining payments. And they're considering striking over it. To help make sense of this -- and to talk about how a strike could affect the economy in Southern California -- we speak with Ben Bergman, an economy reporter for Southern California Public Radio.
